25 – RIA Tomsk, Karina Sapunova. Scientists from the different countries signed
at the Arctic forum in Tomsk the document on creation on the basis of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) the International Arctic Siberian Scientific
Center (IASSC), the press service of the university reported on Friday.
Earlier it
was reported that TPU participates in the international researches of the
processes happening in the shelf of the polar seas of Eastern Siberia where
there are more than 90% of underwater permafrost and a large amount of
hydrocarbons. Scientists found out that from under permafrost there are methane
emissions, they accelerate global warming and can lead to accident. Expanding
researches, in 2016 experts studied the river Ob, in 2017 they plan an
expedition to Lena River.
"The
leading world researchers of the Arctic the day before signed in TPU the
resolution on creation of IASSC in the university. In the resolution scientists
summed up the results of the forum which was taking place on the basis of TPU,
have especially noted plans of further strengthening of cooperation on
grandiose challenges of geosciences and stated intention to create the
International Arctic Siberian Scientific Center in TPU", – is said in the
message.

It is
specified that the document was signed by more than 10 scientists, including
the vice-president of RAS Valentin Sergienko, full members of the Royal Swedish
Academy of Sciences and the Nobel committee professors Örjan Gustafsson and
Leif Anderson, professor of TPU and University of Alaska Fairbanks Natalya of
Shakhov and others.
It is noted
that TPU is considered ideal base for creation of such center for a number of
reasons. In particular, the higher education institution has strong schools of
sciences, conducts researches in the field of natural resources and
natural-science developments. On the basis of Tomsk Polytechnic University
already engaged in studying of the Arctic professor of TPU Igor Semiletov,
received Russian megagrant, and professor Örjan Gustafsson.
"Strategic
investments in TPU IASSC have the high potential for involvement of TPU
scientists in one of new and urgent international regions of scientific
research and creation of breakthrough "advanced" science under the
flag of TPU within the forthcoming decade", - the press service quotes the
text of the resolution.
