remained in the world wooden synagogue to local Jewish community on
February 1; the chief rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar plans to participate in the
ceremony, the press service of the chief rabbi reported on Tuesday.
It is specified that the
authorities of Tomsk and the chief rabbi of Russia agreed about transfer of the
"soldier" synagogue to the Tomsk Jewish community in 2013.
"At the beginning of 2018
city authorities made the final decision on handover of keys from the synagogue
in hands of the Jewish community. On February 1, 2018 the ceremony of handover
of the only wooden synagogue in the world to the Jewish community which was
preserved up to now will be held in Tomsk", – it is said in the statement.
It is added that the chief
rabbi of Russia Lazare plans to participate in the ceremony of handover of
keys. Within the visit he intends to meet the governor of the region Sergey
Zhvachkin and the mayor of Tomsk Ivan Klein, to visit the center of the Jewish
community under construction and to pray in the building of the
"soldier" synagogue after its return to community.
The building where the wooden
"soldier" synagogue settles down, it was built in 1872 in Tomsk on
crossing of the modern Frunze avenue and Belinsky Street. The synagogue
received the look and the status after the fire of 1906 – then it was built up
by the Jewish soldiers serving in Tomsk. It is the only wooden synagogue in the
world and also a historical monument of regional value.
