uninhabited autonomous underwater vehicles (UAUV), which are necessary for
studying the Arctic Ocean; underwater drones will exchange information via
hydroacoustic modems, the innovative portal of the Tomsk region said on Monday.
Earlier it was reported that TPU is
implementing a megaproject "Telecommunication monitoring and control
systems for autonomous underwater robots". Scientists create hardware and
software systems for the new generation of UAUV. In 2016, underwater robots
created with the participation of scientists from TPU, successfully passed
tests in the Arctic, where they were used to study the underwater permafrost.
According to the portal, the use of UAUV
groups will allow exploration of subsoil, inspect pipelines and other equipment
in the Arctic Ocean. However, there are no systems of navigation and control of
a group of devices in the world: satellite communications, electromagnetic
waves and optical methods of communication do not work under water, and the
only "working" method - hydroacoustic - is insufficiently effective.

"Acoustic waves in water allow to
transmit information over distances of tens of kilometers, but paying for this
is an extremely low data transfer rate (tens of bits per second). Our task - is
not to develop an analog, but to create new technologies for positioning,
navigation and group management", - one of the authors of the research
Yury Chursin is quoted in the message.
It is added that a group of scientists
from Institute of Cybernetics of TPU started the project in the spring of 2017.
Among the components of the control system - is a hydroacoustic modem and an
inertial navigation system. It is planned to test them in combination with
other sensors and systems on the UAUV-platform, developed by Tomsk together
with Vladivostok Institute of Marine Technology Problems.
With reference to Chursin, it is noted
that it is planned to realize the main components of the management technologies
of the UAUV group within two years.
