TOMSK, Apr 18 – RIA Tomsk. Open lectures of professors from Moscow and Sweden will be held at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) on Thursday; Tomsk citizens will learn about a personalized approach in oncology and new developments for nuclear medicine, the First Vice-Rector of TPU Mekhman S. Yusubov told RIA Tomsk.

He specified that invited scientists from Moscow and Sweden – Professor Sergey Deev (Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry) and Professor of Uppsala University Vladimir Tolmachyov – will read the lectures.

Lectures at the junction of sciences

"The lecture was initiated by two departments of TPU – Research School of Chemistry & Applied Biomedical Sciences and School of Nuclear Science & Engineering. We have invited interdisciplinary scientists who work in the field of chemistry, biology and nuclear medicine. Professors Deev and Tolmachev - are among key scientists in these fields with more than 25 years of experience", – Yusubov said.

He added that scientists have real developments in the field of diagnostics and therapy of oncological diseases. Professors will tell about some developments to the Tomsk citizens. Anyone can attend their lectures. The working language of the event is – Russian, the venue is – the main building of TPU (Lenin Avenue, 30), room 209, time – 10.00-14.00.

Isotopes and molecules

"In general, the lectures will be about personalized medicine. Now we have learned to recognize some molecular abnormalities in tumors which can only be determined at the molecular level. This is used for cancer therapy. The problem is that some patients have such anomalies, some do not. Therefore, it is important to identify patients", – Tolmachev told RIA Tomsk.

According to him, what will be effective for patients with molecular anomalies can have side effects for patients without anomalies: "And we, with Professor Deev, are developing a new generation of molecular diagnostic agents allowing to visualize anomalies using isotope diagnostics. Thus, therapy becomes more personalized and efficient".

As Professor Deyev added, he will tell at a lecture about theranostic.

"It combines diagnostics and therapy, it was developed in modern medical science to identify molecular characteristics, treatment and monitoring. <...> Personalized medicine in oncology: for example, there is a patient, underwent therapy, but the number of metastasis only grows, in this case, targeted therapy and diagnosis are needed. I will talk about the methods that make the treatment much more effective", – the professor summarized.
