TOMSK, Jun 26 - RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) was the first among Tomsk universities to enter the top 100 of the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019, in the direction of Mechanical Engineering TPU entered the group 76-100 and became the only Russian university represented in this area, the press service of TPU said on Wednesday.
It is specified that the results of the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019 were published on Wednesday, June 26. This subject rating is published annually by the Asian agency ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. It is currently one of the world's leading university rankings along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the QS World University Rankings.
"TPU for the first time entered the top 100 universities of the world in the international ranking (ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019) - in the direction of Mechanical Engineering took place in the group 76-100. Moreover, it became the only Russian university represented in this field, as well as the first Tomsk university, which is in the top 100 of the international rating", - is said in the statement.
It is added that in 2017, when TPU first entered the subject rating in the same direction, the university took the place in the group 151-200. Also in the ranking of this year, TPU is noted in another subject area of this rating - Chemical Engineering. Here the university entered the group 401-500.

"Our university 123 years ago was created as the university of practical engineers. It is noteworthy that one of the first two departments of the university, then the institute, was precisely the mechanical department. Therefore, this subject area is fundamental for us. Entering the top 100 - is entering the top league of the world universities", - the acting rector of TPU Petr Chubik is quoted in the message.
When drawing up the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, experts pay special attention to the publication activity of university scientists, how much their publications and research results are noticeable in the global scientific community, as well as the level of development of international cooperation.
