TOMSK, Jan 27 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) postgraduate student Julia Rosenbaum received a grant from the Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises (FASIE) to develop a compact device for human blood typing; the device will automatically determine the group and Rh factor by a few drops of blood, the scientist herself informed RIA Tomsk.

According to Rosenbaum, her project was among the winners of the "UMNIK" program of the the Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises (FASIE). Postgraduate student of the TPU School of Non-Destructive Testing in the direction of "Photonics, Instrument Engineering, Optical and Biotechnical Systems and Technologies" received 500 thousand rubles for the necessary research in 2020 and 2021.

“Now special reagents are used to determine groups: the results of the studies are interpreted by health workers. In this case, mistakes can be made. The second method - is using gel cards. But this is expensive, and a preparatory stage is required (obtaining red blood cells from the blood). We are creating a device, which automates the interpretation and allows to abandon the preparation of blood", - she said.

The postgraduate student clarified that the device will be portable: its small size will allow the device to be used both in hospitals and in extreme conditions.

"Our device will require fewer reagents than what is currently in use. Also, only a few drops of blood will be enough. Health workers will have to take blood in any way - from a vein or from a finger. After that it will be necessary to add reagents and load the biomaterial into instrument platform”, - Rosenbaum explained.

The device will record the results of the interaction of reagents with blood using special software and show the results on the display. Currently, a prototype device is already done. Over the next two years, Rosenbaum will improve the research methodology and by the end of 2021 will collect a working sample. In the future, she plans to offer development for commercialization to medical companies.
