TOMSK, Nov 27 – RIA Tomsk. The authorities of the Tomsk region decided to name the natural monument of regional significance "Kolarovo wetlands" after the scientist of the Biological Institute of Tomsk State University (BI TSU) Sergey Moskvitin, who made a significant contribution to the study of this territory, follows from the resolution of the regional administration.
As follows from the resolution (at the disposal of the editorial office), the specially protected natural area near Tomsk is now called "Kolarovo wetlands named after Sergey Stepanovich Moskvitin". Sergey Moskvitin is a well-known Russian ornithologist, for a long time he headed the TSU zoological museum. The scientist died in the summer of 2020 in Tomsk.
As an employee of BI TSU Sergey Gashkov told RIA Tomsk, Kolarovo wetlands have always attracted the attention of scientists. At one time, it was Moskvitin who described and proposed to single them out as a key ornithological territory (where the number and diversity of birds is increased during the nesting period, in migratory, wintering aggregations) of regional significance. This idea was supported by the Russian Bird Conservation Union.
"Sergey Stepanovich (Moskvitin) for many years in the spring went there, conducted monitoring surveys, studied the migration processes of birds on this territory ... He had a deep understanding of the importance of these places for the study and protection of birds, for amateur observations of birdwatchers, and its educational and social role in shaping the ecological worldview", - Gashkov said.

Later, the interlocutor of the agency added, the regional authorities assigned them the status of a specially protected natural area. The wetlands are within walking distance from the Teaching and Scientific Station of TSU "Kolarovo Test Range" and have always been used for practices of university students, including biologists.
Earlier it was reported that in 2017, the first tower for birdwatching was installed in the Kolarovo wetlands near Tomsk in 2017. Also, excursions for schoolchildren and students are regularly held on the territory of the wetlands.
