TOMSK, Mar 6 – RIA Tomsk. University of Cambridge, UK - is a suitable prototype for developing the structure and positioning of the “Big University” being created in Tomsk, the acting rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) Victor Dyomin considers.
According to information from open sources, Cambridge - is the second oldest university in the UK after Oxford. It consists of 31 colleges, each of which has its own buildings, libraries, dormitories and so on. Each college has its representatives on the university council. At the same time, students of any college can use the general units of the university.

It was previously reported that the "Big University" project involves the unification of all universities and research institutes of Tomsk into a single scientific and educational consortium with the preservation of the legal autonomy of all participants. The main goal of the project - is to obtain a synergy effect from the addition of scientific, educational and infrastructural opportunities for full-fledged competition with world university centers.

"I always cite the University of Cambridge as an example. It is a university that holds leading positions in world rankings that everyone knows. In terms of positioning, this is just a good example. It has a lot of togetherness with Tomsk. Starting with the fact that Cambridge - it’s also a university city”, - Dyomin told reporters on Friday.
According to him, the unification of Tomsk universities and research institutes following the example of Cambridge colleges will make it possible to advance the "Tomsk University" brand on the world stage, which implies not one, but six universities at once.
“It took centuries to from a unified Cambridge brand. But the unified "Tomsk University" - is also a prominent brand in the global scientific and educational space. And we must decide what is better - to tell on the external market in what one Tomsk university is better than another or to go united as the “Big University"? In my opinion, the latter is better”, - Dyomin is sure.
One for all
The acting rector of TPU reminded that about 60 thousand students are studying in Tomsk today, in plans - are to increase their number to 100 thousand. At the same time, Tomsk universities are correlated with the leaders of the world scientific and educational complex - universities of New York, Toronto, Minnesota, Arizona and other large educational institutions from the top 100 of world rankings.
According to Dyomin, the general brand "Big University" is especially important in terms of international positioning. In this case, the name of the large-scale project can be changed.
“For the time being, I will beware of claiming that the name will be exactly “Big University”. The issue is being discussed, and there are different opinions on this matter”, - he summed up.
